Written marks; Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates awarded
    RSC Chemistry Olympiad

The RSC's UK Chemistry Olympiad takes A-Level chemistry into research-flavoured territory: a question might open with a recently published synthesis or an industrial process and then ask you to reason about mechanism, energetics and yield. Nothing is beyond the syllabus in principle, but everything is beyond the textbook in presentation. Past papers with the official worked answers are the most efficient preparation, because they teach you to read a long unfamiliar stem and pull out the chemistry that matters.

    Past papers by year

Each year page lists the official paper source, the answer key location, difficulty notes and how to review your solutions.

    What the paper tests

    Organic mechanisms

Curly arrows, stereochemistry, synthesis routes and functional group logic.

    Quantitative chemistry

Moles, titrations, yields, empirical formulae from real data.

    Equilibria & kinetics

Kc and Kp, Le Chatelier reasoning, rate laws and mechanisms.

    Energetics

Enthalpy cycles, bond energies, entropy and feasibility.

    Inorganic & structure

Periodicity, transition metals, bonding and spectroscopy clues.

    Context reading

Extracting the chemistry from a long unfamiliar passage under time pressure.

    Frequently asked questions

Where can I find UK Chemistry Olympiad past papers and answers?
The Royal Society of Chemistry publishes past Round 1 papers with mark schemes on its education site. We link to the official archive and add mentor walkthroughs of the harder mechanism and calculation questions.
How do I get a Gold certificate?
Boundaries are set annually against the field, with Gold going to roughly the top tier of entrants. In practice, students who finish the paper and show complete working on quantitative parts score far above those who do not.
