BAAO & Astro Challenge Past Papers & Solutions
British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad
BAAO and Astronomy & Astrophysics Challenge past papers with solutions — orbits, stellar physics, cosmology and observational data problems.
- Eligibility
- Year 13 (BAAO) and Year 11–13 (Astro Challenge)
- Format
- Long-answer astrophysics problems with data analysis
- Duration
- Approximately 2 hours 45 minutes (BAAO)
- Scoring
- Written marks with Gold, Silver and Bronze certificate tiers
The British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad applies A-Level mechanics and a little new astrophysics to genuinely astronomical situations: orbital dynamics, stellar luminosity, redshift, telescope resolution and real observational data. Most students find the physics familiar and the context unfamiliar, so past papers do double duty — they teach the astronomy vocabulary and they drill the long symbolic derivations the paper is built around.
Past papers by year
Each year page lists the official paper source (paper BAAO and paper Astro Challenge), the answer key location, difficulty notes and how to review your solutions.

Frequently asked questions
- Where can I find BAAO past papers and solutions?
- The BPhO publishes BAAO and Astronomy & Astrophysics Challenge past papers with full solutions on its website. We link to the official archive and coach the derivations step by step.
- Do I need to have studied astronomy before?
- No. The physics is A-Level mechanics, gravitation and waves; the astronomy conventions — magnitudes, parsecs, redshift — are learnable in a few sessions and then recur in every paper.
